The Wonderfully Coloured Houses On Italy's Little Island Of Burano...

Forty minutes away from Italy's famous Venice is the wonderful old and colourful island of Burano.
The island which is home to a fishing village that dates back to the Roman times is not only famous for it's colourful houses but for its beautiful handmade lace.
The story goes that often when the fishermen returned to their homes they couldn't see them as a result of the heavy fog, so bright colours were introduced. Of course a specific colouring system developed and now if someone wants to paint their house, they need to send a request in to the government no less, to make sure their colour choice is permitted for that lot.
It's good to know that even in a simple little Italian fishing village, bureaucracy
is alive and well...

  2. Bureaucracy or not they are a gorgeous sight. But shame about the dead hand of authority...what if some creative soul wanted to paint a pattern, or a scene of some sort on his house...they'd be squashed no doubt.

  4. I have visited this lovely island & the residents are among the friendliest in the world. The language difference was not a problem as they communicated with their hands, & being Southern, so did I & consequently, I was afforded much warm hospitality. I hope to visit again.

  5. Burano is just as gorgeous as these photos make out. What you can't portray with a photo is the smells... of cooking, of canals, of drains in the heat, the sound of Italian voices (they can be so strident), ..the whole ambience of this particularly special part of Italy.
