17 Year Old Nobel Peace Prize Winner Malala Yousafzai Tells World Leaders A Thing Or Two...

During Malala's powerful acceptance speech at the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony in Oslo a few days ago, the young Pakistani schoolgirl who was shot by the Taliban two years ago and has become a global icon, was now sharing the most prestigious of prizes with Indian child rights campaigner Kailash Satyarthi. The gutsy and eloquent Malala criticised world governments for having the resources to begin wars but not the will to enable peace and universal education.
The world's youngest Nobel laureate's wonderful acceptance speech laced with self-deprecating humour is here.
She called as all peace prize winners do, not just for education but also fairness and caring.
The so-called world of adults may understand it, but we children don't. Why is it that countries which we call 'strong' are so powerful in creating wars but so weak in bringing peace? she said.
Why is it that giving guns is so easy but giving books is so hard? Why is it that making tanks is so easy, but building schools is so difficult?
World leaders aren't interested in peace Malala,
there's no money in it...

Norway's City Of Trondheim Has The Trampe Cyclocable. It's Like A Ski Lift For Cyclists And Pedestrians...

Norway's beautiful city of Trondheim first installed their famous Trampe Cyclocable, a sort of ski lift for pedestrians and cyclists back in 1993 and have last year installed a better
safer cyclocable.
While purists may scoff at the idea the cyclists of Trondheim, especially the average commuter cyclist and older cyclists, hills can be a real problem but the locals are delighted with
their cycle lift.
There's more about it here.
It can't be that hard to install and would be an asset to many cities...

A Very Different Approach To Bridge Building In Norway...

Unlike the folk in Thailand who built their simple beautiful bamboo bridge in only a few days, the people of the little coastal town of Sand in Norway opted for a stunning looking corten steel with stainless steel and stretch-metal pedestrian bridge to ford a little fast-running local river.
The Hose Pedestrian Bridge comes complete with a pavilion for just  having a picnic and enjoying the views.
This is their only access to wonderful hiking and running trails in the woodland by the town which is enjoyed by the eleven hundred locals and the many visitors who come to the area.
The residents of Sand had access to Rintala Eggertsson Architects and a bit more money to spend than our Thai Villagers with their Needs Must Bridge but both do the job intended and both are indeed, beautiful...

Norway's Prime Minister Takes A Second Job As A Taxi Driver...

Norwegian Prime Minister didn't have to take a second job as a cab driver for financial reasons.
Jens Stoltenberg just knows as politicians the world over know that the people who actually know what's happening and how their country should be run are its hairdressers and cabbies.
So donning a cab driver's uniform and dark glasses he got behind the wheel of an Oslo cab.
The comments and the passengers reactions on realising who the driver was were captured on a camera. Some naturally enough took advantage of the situation to tell the Prime Minister how they saw things and how he should be running the country. As you would.
Mistaking the brake pedal for the clutch at one time, the passenger advised the Mr Stoltenberg not to give up his day job.
But with him and his party lagging behind in the polls prior to the September elections, perhaps he'll keep his job options open...

Rjuken, The Little Town In Norway That'll Get Its Sunshine From Directional Mirrors...

Deep in the narrow Vestfjord valley in Norway's Telemark, surrounded by steep slopes at the foot of the Gaustatoppen Mountain lies the little industrial town of Rjuken.
Because of its aspect, the town gets no sun for around six months of the year.
Back in 1913, Rjuken's lateral thinker and imaginative founder Sam Eyde came up with the idea of using mirrors to direct the sun into the town and now, a hundred years later, that dream is about to become a reality and letting the sunshine in is all to be done with mirrors.
A computer driven heliostat placed at the top of a steep mountain wall four hundred metres above the town will capture the sun's rays and direct them into Rjuken's town centre illuminating a two hundred square foot area.
Power to the people.
If you can dream it you can do it...

Norway Police Duck For Cover...

It's all in a day's work for Norway's Politi who are trained to be generalists.
They're able to fulfil every aspect of ordinary policing work including the usual criminal investigations, street patrolling and maintaining public order.
It's obvious that this family of ducks are committing a heinous crime, flaunting traffic laws and jaywalking on a public highway.
Or should that be jaywaddling...
