You Can Say What You Like...

Freedom of speech is a contentious issue.
It's something millions have died or been incarcerated and ostracised for while
trying to preserve our rights to speak it.
Our friend Leunig seems to sum up the situation with an apt play on words from this version of Voltaire's famous quote, I don't care what you say or how you say it but I'll defend to the death your right to say it...

Anywhere's Better Than Here...

There will be many in today's world who'd much sooner be anyplace other than where they are but they won't have the freedom of choice this young traveling man has.
I'm thinking of those seeking political asylum and have ended up in grotesque refugee camps. The casualties of Iraq, Syria, Palestine and other war zones. The survivors of Cyclone Pam. The too many people on death row somewhere, or those incarcerated for crimes they are innocent of. Victims of family violence, political prisoners. Those behind bars for daring to speak their truths. They would give their all to be standing in this man's shoes and be able to go.
Anywhere...

Je Suis Charlie...

Je Suis Charlie.
Free Speech Is Spoken Here and always will be.
The attack on Charlie Hebdo is one of the most chilling events of recent times and could have more ramifications than Nine Eleven.
Freedom of speech is at the very core of civilisation and a democratic world.
We have all been attacked.
There are thousands of men and women incarcerated in prisons and labour camps in countries that don't allow freedom of expression. We owe it to them and ourselves
to stand up for our rights.
Without the liberty to speak we will all spend our lives shackled and in fear.
Illustrators, cartoonists and social commentators from around the world have very quickly, simply and creatively responded in their own
wonderful way.
But our world will never be the same again...

It's Said That The Pen Is Mightier Than The Sword...

The pen they say, is mightier than the sword. There will be some who dispute that but for me there is nothing outside of nature that's as powerful as the written word.
I'm appalled by the cold blooded murder of twelve social commentators at the Paris based satirical French magazine Charlie Hebdo.
I believe in the freedom of speech and will always speak my mind.
Many have died in wars so you and I can.
And I know full well that we don't see things as they are, but as we are...

Grieving For The World That Was And Now Is...

I know how lucky I am.
I know it every morning when I wake to the sun rising from the edge of the horizon.
My personal problems are few and forgettable.
Most days I cut wood and collect water.
Some days I catch a fish. Some days I don't.
I'm at a place where even when the wildest winds are buffeting, when the rain is mixed with the salt spray from the sea and hitting my Flying Tortoise at a million miles an hour, there's still a peacefulness about being here,
this place I choose to call home, for this moment.
Living simply. By this tree. In the now.
It's a place kissed by the sun and lit by the moon. It's a place where the stars are the brightest.
It's a place of infinite natural beauty where the rest of humanity isn't and I like that.
But I grieve.
I've been recently reminded of some words of wisdom by Martin Luther King.
'Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter'.
As a human being I have a voice.
As a social commentator I'm compelled to speak.
The world is an untenable place for many.
The little country of New Zealand, once touted as the best place in the world to bring up children,
is I'm afraid, no longer.
It has become, just like yours, a country where the rich get richer and the poor get poorer.
Where the have's want more and the have not's just want enough.
There are just way too many living lives of quiet desperation. Inequality is alive, well and thriving.
And the greater the inequalities in a society, the more crime and social ills there are.
Corruption implicating the Prime Minister and his government is alive and well in New Zealand politics too. Political arrogance is rife.
We are about to have elections and it won't matter who we vote for, the government will win.
And impose more and more restrictions rules and regulations on the population at large.
But as usual, those who make the rules and seek to impose them, are themselves
rarely affected by them.
Banks will continue to offer an umbrella while the sun shines and demand it back when rain threatens.
Corporations will continue to make vast fortunes at our expense and drug companies will create illnesses for the world to have so their products will gain greater market share.
And I grieve.
When I was a child I grew up with complete freedom. The doors of the family home didn't need to be locked at night,
I went to the beach unsupervised, with other children, we played on the streets, child molestation and rape were unheard of.
People were free to be who and what they wanted. The gap between rich and poor
was hardly noticeable.
How I grieve for what was.
And how I grieve as you may, that none of our grandchildren will see the beauty of that world.
They won't know about climbing trees, learning to catch and prepare fish.
They won't know the simple pleasures of life.
They will never know how amazingly free and beautiful their country was.
They will know another world. A virtual world.
They will know about greed and consumerism though. They will know about hate, jealousy, killing and bigotry.
They will be consumed by Social Media.
It's taken over the world. It's taken over lives.
It will take over theirs.
It will consume them and spit them out.
Abject trivia is the order of the day with people sharing their most intimate and boring secrets.
And the owners of Facebook, Twitter and others are ever encouraging. They love it.
They can and do track our every movement as we make our way, often stumbling through our inconsequential lives.
Our privacy is no longer. Future Shock is past and 1984 is well and truly here having surpassed it's author's wildest dreams.
Whatever you do and whenever you do it and whoever you do it with is easily known. The GPS on your smartphone isn't for you, it's for those who wish to track your every movement. Your every purchase is recorded. Communication companies store your phone calls, your emails are available for scrutiny.
Your deleted texts are easily found.
And the Social Media that was spawned in the western world is being used now by those who despise the ways of the West.
And the West cannot escape criticism.
It too has guilt on its hands.
Social Media is a weapon of mass destruction.
Social Media, the plaything that billions of people use every day is wrecking havoc with the fabric of society throughout the world.
It will remain unchecked and we will have our minds and lives altered and destroyed by the ongoing videos of the most vile, grotesque and despicable crimes against humanity.
Such as the propaganda videos of the recent beheadings in the Middle East that were presented on Social Media to the world.
I believe in Freedom of Speech and I grieve...

Help Save Russia From Yourself Vladimir...

I don't wish to tell you how to run your country
Mr Putin, well, that's not quite true, maybe I do.
I guess nobody's ever told you that the world in general and Russia in particular would be better places without your bullying tactics and repressive regime.
I'm sure you're aware of Freedom of Speech.
Of course you are.
You say and do what you like all the time.
The people of Russia Vladimir, are entitled to the same liberties. But hey, I know you're busy, it's probably something you've just overlooked.
Look Vlad, I'm very aware that there are many other leaders who've got carried away by their own importance and have a lot to answer for too. Yes, their records when it comes to Human Rights leave a lot to be desired and
when I can find the time I'll be talking to them
on that very issue.
But today it's your turn Vlad.
You can be such a Pussy sometimes you know.
If there's anything you'd like to chat about or think I might be able to help at all, just email me...

A Celebration. One Thousand Posts...

I bought this stunningly beautiful glass sculpture of Miles Davis blowing his trumpet at a market on San Francisco's Union Street back in the 1980's.
The great musician had them made by a highly talented glass artist and usually gave them as gifts. It's about 16 inches high, exquisitely delicate and I was lucky to get it.
It's apt for today. If you'll indulge me,
I'll blow my own trumpet. Just a little.
Today's post is the thousandth post and the latest in over 950 without missing a day.
I'm delighted to bring it to you and thank you for sharing the oft-times funny, weird and wonderful journey The Flying Tortoise is on.
There's been many highlights, the biggest is the friends I've made around the globe.
Discovering the 'Stats' blogger information a year or so ago was a revelation and I've watched the daily page views go from under 200 to steadily climb and go over 11,500 on one day just a week or so ago.
My aim, apart from amusing myself, is to present something brief, humorous, entertaining, maybe inspiring, thought provoking and informative to you each day.
Perhaps brighten another's day and contribute something positive to the world.
Some days are funnier, more entertaining and informative than others but that's life.
Your humorous, intelligent, critical and yes, pithy commenting too, is welcome.
Freedom of speech is valued here as is the lack of profanity.
There are millions of blogs out there.
I thank you for taking precious time to visit here...

John Lennon Lives On In Prague...

The John Lennon Wall is dedicated to peace and the freedom of speech.
Situated in Mala Strana in the Czech Republic's beautiful city of Prague, this once very ordinary wall has, since the 1980's been transformed, painted over and painted again and again by many thousands of people who initially defied the authorities and risked imprisonment to voice their views in their quest for personal freedoms.
John Lennon influenced and inspired the 'Velvet Revolution' which eventually led to the fall of communism in the former Czechoslovakia in 1989.
In 2011, The Protester was Time Magazine's Person of The Year.
Perhaps The Protester will, in 2012, become even more of a figure of hope.
We might even witness less greed and our world may become less punitive, more benevolent, more giving and caring.
Maybe the campaigns against world and local governments who continue to take personal freedoms away from their citizens will be won.
Maybe governments will listen to what their people want.
Maybe I'm being silly and naive again.
Welcome to my first post of this new year.
I wish you much love, peace, happiness and good health in 2012...
