5Points. New York's Historic Graffiti Mecca, Is No More...

In the middle of the night on November 19, 2013, the owner of the famous 5Points building, Jerry Walkoff, who wants to knock the famous building down so he can make more money developing high rise apartment buildings on the site, whitewashed the building and obliterated the works of more than fifteen hundred artists who had come from all around the world to be a little part of the iconic building's history.
Mr Walkoff decided that whitewashing the artworks was a more prudent approach than attacking the art with a wrecking ball which could well have caused a very ugly confrontation.
He would have been right.
He will probably still incur the wrath of New York's artists who hopefully will use his new development as a wonderful new canvas...

  1. we need to rethink our ideas about property

  2. What a loss!! But he owns the building.

  3. It's a shame that the buildings that have graffiti which is real, breathtaking art are the ones that are destroyed as opposed to the buildings with just scribbles

  4. It sure looks good now ... Not what an eyesore

  5. I have to find out from a New Zealender (sic?) whats happening down the block from me. Gotta love the net :)
