Now, nearly two hundred other immensely rich men and women have pledged to give half their vast fortunes to charities.
Becoming a signatory has brought those who've joined this exclusive club glowing press coverage, more fame and probably even more to their already bulging bank accounts.
Signing the pledge however hasn't and doesn't make them legally liable to give away a brass razzoo and neither Bill Gates or Warren Buffett ask the pledge takers to prove a thing.
But the idea is a noble one and hopefully the many who've signed will follow the fine examples of Mr Buffett and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation who give so many of their squillions.
