My good friends at Root Simple, a blog featuring wonderful low-tech ideas posted this beer can stove the other day and I just had to share it.
This could be the simplest beer can stove ever.
If you don't drink beer, don't worry, any aluminium can will do the job.
It's a cheap and efficient little stove that will boil a litre of water in five minutes.
There's a seven minute video here with simple step by step instructions.
Trust me, you can do it. It's wonderfully simple and certainly not rocket science.
Back in January of this year I published a post about a simple, cheap and efficient Rocket Stove. If you're interested in that too, you can see it here...

Hmmm ok..looks too dangerous to me..
ReplyDeleteUnless, of course, you are intending on building a rocket stove.
ReplyDeleteI don't "do" videos. What's he using for fuel? Alcohol?
Yes, pure alcohol, medical alcohol, or rubbing alcohol which is available at most pharmacies...
DeleteWow, that's real nifty. It's always good to know alternative things. You never know when it can come in handy.
ReplyDeleteThis looks potentially useful in a pinch. I'm very interested in rocket stoves and especially mass rocket stoves. But can you home build them? Those Aprovecho numbers are built to very fine tolerances that I don't think I or most other backyard tinkerers could manage. I've seen videos on home-built rocket stoves made from an oil drum, but those things are *huge,* more like a canned bonfire. How 'bout somethin a little more manageable, but more durable (and safer?) than these beer cans?
ReplyDeleteDidn't Keith post something here a while back about a stove made from a couple of tins and a bucket of beach sand? Or was that over at Lloyd Kahn's?
DeleteAlso, I could tell you some amusing stories about Aprovecho before they became successful and famous, back when they were a hippie commune named "Touch the Earth"...
You did see it here Mr Sparkey. It was a rocket stove. It's good to see you're paying attention...
DeleteI ~always~ pay attention, it's one of the few things I can afford these days.
DeleteNow, since your site doesn't seem to have a search feature, how do you propose we find this elusive rocket stove post? The tags at the end of this post don't seem to be linked to anything useful at the moment...
Because you asked me so nicely, I'll find it for you Mr Smartey. I wouldn't want you getting snarkey...
DeleteThere you are, the rocket stove link is now included on this post...
Deletegreat! all sorts of alcohol will work - once in the Czech Republic we couldn't find alcohol, nobody seemed to understand "spiritus" or the like, so finally, in desperation, we bought a big bottle of the cheapest Eau de Cologne, "Chypre", and it worked beautifully, just made huge amounts of soot all over. Later we learned, alcohol is called "lih" there - could You have guessed that??
