Californian Artist Gregory Kloehn Creates Micro Homes From Garbage For Homeless People In Oakland...

Most artists create art to make money by selling their creative endeavours.
But not so with Gregory Kloehn who's featured here before with his micro house made from a garbage skip that he parked on a city street.
Each day Gregory scours Oakland for bits and pieces that could be used to a construct some sort of creative shelter for the homeless
in his area.
And there's many who're delighted he does...

  4. Mixed emotions - great that Gregory Kloehn has the milk of human kindness and acts accordingly. Appalling that in the richest nation in the world, some people have to resort to living in glorified dog kennels. I bet Obama's pets do better by far.

  5. Awesome man . But I know in a lot of American cities they are moving in on the homeless and trying to make the leave. Where their supposed to go is beyond me.

  6. I agree with Graham. What Kloehn's doing is great. Yet isn't it a commentary that being being given something to dwell in that resembles a doghouse represents a substantial *improvement* in the situation of homeless people? At least it gives relative security while sleeping, a major concern for someone out in the street, and potentially life-saving shelter from weather.

I've lived in the USA nearly all my life, over half a century. During that time it has degenerated from great prosperity into something like a pre-Dickensian society. We're not that far from having workhouses, and debtor's prison is already a de facto reality for some people in certain circumstances. Yet the general public appear oblivious to these realities, and indifferent to the fates of those whom they befall. Public policy reflects these attitudes, and is an expression of them.

To be perfectly blunt: America is a cruel, disgusting place. If you live in a country with decent public services and a social fabric that isn't rotted away, you should thank your lucky stars; I sure wish I did.

    2. I think this is a great idea, but I did wonder where these dwellings would be situated. Even so, well done Gregory!
ValMay 18, 2014 at 5:07 PM Here in Australia we were doing pretty well, but we still have people living on the streets. But now our PM Tony Abbott is trying to put more of us on the streets with his new Budget!!! Still can't understand why anyone would willingly do this. A sad time for Australians.
      Regards, Keith.

    3. Keith, don't think for a moment that your Prime Minister Tony Abbott gives a damn about you. He's tarred with the same brush as many before him...

  7. Well that's a very damning comment on America, Val. I saw my first homeless people sleeping on the streets when I visited New York in 1970 after living in London. Now they are commonplace in London, and have been since the Thatcher years (maybe before?). So I think it's not only the USA that has deteriorated in it's public policies.
