Henry David Thoreau...

Henry David Thoreau, the great American philosopher, writer and one of my favourite people, who's best remembered for 'Walden' spoke in a similar manner to the Dalai Lama but about one hundred and eighty years earlier.
"I went to the woods because I wanted to live deliberately. To front only the essentials of life and see if I could learn what it had to teach and not, when it came time to die, discover that I had not lived".
He also said amongst other things, "Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you have imagined. As you simplify your life, the laws of the universe will become simpler".
And too, "Most men live lives of quiet desperation".
But most aptly, "Success is not what you have but what you can love living without"...

  3. I was just 1/2 hour away from Walden Pond(Concord, Mass) but got held back by the passing of Hurricane Irene. Since I live in NZ, this was quite a disappointment but thankfully his words do not require site visits,
