I Like The Challenge Of Living With Less...
I like the challenge of living with less says Carol.
I'm richer for it...
I don't know about more selective, just seem to have left somethings behind over the last few years whilst being nomadic, for want of a better word, and haven't felt the need to replace them.....certainly now just prefer a few simple, needed, items of good quality so they last and don't yearn for peripheral stuff that just gathers dust.
But why is it so hard to work out what's enough.......? And you do need more than the vital stuff...isn't that part of being civilised? - otherwise one pair of clothes and a toothbrush would do me
Funny one! I'm in a tiny house right now, getting ready to move onto a tinier houseboat. As packing commences I think...where did I even put some of this stuff?? Gonna be some pitchin' going on and it already feels good.
When his current clothes get dirty he simply goes and buys another set of cheap ones and trashes the old ones. He may even leave them in a clothes recycle bin, I don't know... but he doesn't have a wardrobe or a set of drawers. Or even a house. And he travels light. He uses a cut down toothbrush...
We have a character who comes down off the mtn occasionally for supplies & he's been in same patched overalls for about 2 yrs. You can smell him 1/2 block away & it is offensive to everybody. There are hundreds of creeks & rivers he could bathe in so one has to conclude he's just nasty & doesn't consider others.Nobody wants to smell his stink or have to look at his filthy clothes.
At some point you don't own things -they own you.
ReplyDeleteAnd the more you own, the more you're owned...
DeleteHave to agree with Sixbears. I'm also finding the older I get the less that I need.
ReplyDeleteAre you becoming more selective John?

DeleteI've already got as much less as I can handle - more, in fact. I'll be happy to give some away.
ReplyDeleteMoreover, I just spent the last fourteen hours being sick as a dog, and I could do with *loads* of sympathy.
Val I'm sending a symphony of sympathy.
DeleteAll you really need is enough so if it's too much, give some away.
Get well soon...
Worry about the vital stuff first , everything else are extras.

ReplyDeleteJack Reacher has only one set of clothes.
DeleteAnd a toothbrush...

DeleteWell according to the law of 'what's enough' i bet he questions whether he needs those - at least the toothbrush......

DeleteI don't like that trashing the clothes when they get dirty - not very sustainable......much better to wash them and lie low until they're dry?
ReplyDeleteI'm sure Jack is very ecologically minded and when and where he can, he will do just as you suggest...
