Photographer Michael Wolf's 100x100 Series Shows People In Hong Kong Living In Very Tiny Spaces...

Photographer Michael Wolf  has featured here before with his series on Chinese Factory Workers And the Toys They Make and recently, with his Architecture Of Destiny images.
Some time ago he documented 100 occupants and their rooms measuring 100 square feet at Hong Kong's oldest public housing complex at Shek Kip Mei Estate.
The series is called 100x100 and you can see more of the series here.
Rather than complain that they only had 100 square feet, the folk he photographed and spoke with said they were happy to have so much space and such nice neighbours.
And that's basically all they needed.
A wonderful attitude.
Michael Wolf recommends viewing these images while you are in a similar sized room.
Just to see and feel how small an area it is...

How Some People Exist In 40 Sq Feet. A View From The Top...

Last month we saw here, German photographer Michael Wolf's stunning photo essay Architecture of Density.
A series of images showing high rise apartment buildings, squeezed together cheek by jowl in the densely populated city of Hong Kong.
Now the Hong Kong advocacy group, Society For Community Organisation show us how some of the interiors look with photographs detailing the deplorable living conditions of one of the most populated cities on earth.

In Hong Kong People Are Packed Into Sardine Can Sized Apartments: Michael Wolf And His Architecture Of Density Images...

By choice I'm lucky to live in 131 square feet of house bus with all amenities and enjoy a good and healthy lifestyle. I'm very happy.
And then there's the great outdoors.
But the seven million residents or should I say Sardines of Hong Kong don't have very much choice at all.
For various reasons, only twenty three percent of the land is developed and of that, less than seven percent is used for housing.
This goes to make Hong Kong one of the most densly populated places on the planet.
Most of Hong Kong's resident sardines are packed into 6588 high rise buildings making New York pale into insignificence with only 5818 high rise residential shoeboxes.
The celebrated German photographer Michael Wolf, who you'll remember gave us Chinese Factory Workers and The Toys They Make published here late last year, has been putting his considerable talents to his Architecture of Density series of images, showing the living conditions of these people and how they live.
These people living in these claustrophobic residential cages are some of the lucky ones though.
There are others who live in far worse conditions.
You'll notice that neither sky nor land feature in these images.
Neither land nor sky feature in these people's lives...

Chinese Factory Workers And The Toys They Make...

German photographer Michael Wolf visited the five toy factories in Mainland China where seventy five percent of the world's toys are manufactured.
He's documented The Real Toy Story.
The retail price of one high quality toy sold in the western market is often more than six months salary for a Chinese toy worker.
While I've no wish to reduce the already meager earnings of these toy factory workers who work in abysmal conditions, I suggest you give consideration to buying products made in your own country.
I know that here in New Zealand,
if we don't buy buy more locally manufactured products, it will be bye bye New Zealand...
