Brazilian Samuel de Oliveira is unable to walk but has taken matters into his own hands.I couldn't access the Health Department offices here in Juina because there was no wheelchair access and the town's bureaucrats didn't care says Samuel.
So the resourceful man turned up with a bucket of cement, some bits of wood and made his own.
If you want something done, sometimes you need to do it yourself says the paraplegic who's obviously prepared to walk the talk...
Those bureaucrats should be ashamed of themselves. And good on the man for not thinking of himslf as a "victim" and giving up.

DeleteWhat would a quadraplegic have done. So many people in this world have no help or far less than they need. Not everyone is capable of building their own ramp. Sad. No one stopped by to help?

ReplyDeleteI admire this man's determination. In the States there would probably be a wheelchair ramp, mandated by law. But if not, he wouldn't be allowed to put one in himself. He'd be forcibly prevented and his construction would be destroyed. Most likely the authorities would fine him, make him pay for the (very costly) destruction of his handiwork, and perhaps even charge him with some minor offense. Any official solution to his problem, if attempted, would involve very substantial public expense, benefiting some outrageously overcharging contractor. Bureauracy has many ways of preventing sanity from happening.
